METKA EGN is looking for an experienced and proactive HSE Manager to support the delivery of large-scale solar and battery energy storage projects across the UK & Ireland.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-growing renewable energy business and play a key role in driving health, safety and environmental excellence across all project phases — from development and pre-construction through to construction and operations & maintenance.
Working closely with the HSE Country Manager, Project Directors, and both Construction and O&M Project Managers, the HSE Manager will ensure the effective implementation and management of robust Safe Systems of Work across all sites, including coordination with subcontractors, clients and Local Planning Authorities (LPA) where required.
The role covers responsibilities across pre-construction, construction, and operations & maintenance phases, while also supporting health and safety requirements within the London office.
The HSE Manager reports directly to the HSE Country Manager (UK & Ireland).
What You’ll Be Doing
- Supporting large renewable energy and construction projects across the UK and Ireland.
- Working closely with site teams, project managers, subcontractors and clients.
- Spending time both on site and supporting HSE compliance and documentation activities.
- Supporting safe site set-up and day-to-day HSE operations.
- Working in multicultural and international project environments.
- Supporting both ongoing projects and future project pipelines.
- Conducting HSE audits, inspections and compliance reviews.
- Supporting accident and incident investigations when required.
- Ensuring Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) are implemented and maintained across all project phases.
- HSE planning activities during development, construction and operational phases.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelopment & Pre-Construction Phase
The HSE Manager will support the Project Director and the other HSE Managers during the preparation and planning stages before construction starts. Responsibilities include:
- Liaising with development and grid departments to ensure all planning conditions are fully completed and discharged.
- Liaising with the Client, Principal Designer (PD), Designers and Project Manager (PM) to ensure good communication between all duty holders.
- Attending kick-off meetings with the Project Director, Client, PD, PM and Landlord.
- Carrying out site surveys on new projects and preparing reports for distribution to all departments.
- Assisting with reviewing and collating all HSE requirements from the Preconstruction Information (PCI), associated documentation and planning conditions relevant to the project.
- Ensuring all foreseeable risks and hazards are identified and included in the Construction Phase Health & Safety Plan (CPHSP).
- Liaising with the PD and designers to ensure the Design Risk Assessment (DRA) is prepared and updated throughout all construction phases.
- Providing HSE advice to the project team and supporting the preparation of CPP, ERP, TMP and related project documents.
Construction Phase
- Attending initial site meetings to ensure all project team members understand their HSE responsibilities.
- Advising on correct site establishment and ensuring welfare facilities comply with legal requirements.
- Ensuring the HSE Site Manager follows the METKA EGN Safe Management System (SMS).
- Conducting HSE monitoring, inspections and audits to ensure METKA EGN management systems are implemented.
- Conducting HSE audits and producing HSE audit reports for close-out of issues.
- Carrying out internal investigations following accidents or incidents when required.
- Conducting HSE inspections prior to energisation and project completion to ensure all mandatory H&S signage and controls are in place.
- Supporting the preparation of the power plant Health & Safety File.
- Maintaining construction phase HSE site folders in line with METKA EGN’s SMS.
Operations & Maintenance Phase
- Conducting annual HSE audits to ensure compliance with HSE legislation and regulations.
- Reviewing the HSE systems of main O&M contractors.
- Ensuring full HSE compliance for subcontractors, including RAMS review/approval, CPP preparation, PTW issue, competency checks and PQQ approval requirements.
- Ensuring all H&S signage is in place.
- Leading safe systems of work (SSoW) across operational sites.
- Ensuring compliance with H&S documentation and Fire Reform Regulations.
- Reviewing risk assessments and method statements.
- Conducting accident and incident investigations and producing detailed reports.
- Producing HSE audit reports and supporting close-out actions with contractors and project teams.
Additional Responsibilities
- Ensuring all contractors complete the METKA EGN Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ).
- Supporting prequalification and tender activities for new projects.
- Briefing project teams on accident, incident and near miss procedures.
- Conducting investigations into complaints where required.
London Office HSE Responsibilities
- Maintaining and updating the H&S noticeboard.
- Ensuring all first aid equipment is in date and fully stocked.
- Ensuring fire extinguishers are serviceable and in date.
- Conducting inductions for new starters.
- Ensuring new starters sign office risk assessments.
- Updating the training matrix.
What We’re Looking ForEssential
- Minimum 5–7 years’ experience in Construction Health, Safety and Environmental Management within large-scale solar and/or battery EPC projects, or civil construction projects, utilities projects, power generation projects, infrastructure projects.
- Practical HSE experience in construction, renewables, utilities, infrastructure or power generation.
- Experience working directly on site.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Comfortable working with different cultures and teams.
- NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate (or equivalent).
- Thorough understanding of CDM 2015.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excel and Microsoft Office proficiency.
- Full driving licence.
- Fluent English, both written and spoken.
Desirable
- NEBOSH Environmental Certificate.
- NEBOSH Fire Certificate.
- ISO14001 / ISO45001 Internal or Lead Auditor qualification.
- Risk Assessment certification.
- Experience in solar, wind or utility-scale renewable projects.
- Experience with site audits and compliance activities.
- Background in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering.
