Location: Targovishte, Bulgaria
Department: Project Construction / Electrical Engineering
Reports To: Site Manager
Employment Type: Full-time, On-site
Job Purpose
The LV/MV Electrical Engineer is responsible for supervising the installation, testing, and pre-commissioning of all low-voltage and medium-voltage assets on site. The scope heavily covers the positioning and wiring of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units, integration of power conversion systems (inverters/PCS), installation of the 33kV collection network (transformers and switchgears), and the deployment of SCADA, control, and auxiliary power systems. The role ensures all systems function safely and align with technical designs up to final commissioning (Act 16).
Key Responsibilities
1. LV/MV Installation & BESS Supervision
- Supervise the installation, anchoring, and electrical termination of BESS containers, inverters, and enclosure auxiliary systems. Oversee the laying, pulling, and jointing of all 33kV medium-voltage cables and low-voltage control/DC cabling.Manage the installation of MV switchgear, ring main units (RMUs), auxiliary transformers, and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems. Ensure all DC battery rack cabling, busbars, and internal fire suppression/HVAC electrical interfaces are installed to exact manufacturer standards.
2. SCADA, Automation & Control Integration
- Monitor the deployment of the site’s Energy Management System (EMS), SCADA networks, fiber-optic communication lines, and metering systems.Supervise the wiring of control panels, signal testing, and point-to-point checks between the BESS units, the 33/110kV substation, and the main control room.
3. Testing, Quality Control & Pre-Commissioning
- Review and approve testing protocols for MV cables (e.g., insulation, VLF testing), grounding grids, and low-voltage protection loops.
- Witness and log Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for BESS containers, inverters, and MV switchgear.
- Identify, document, and resolve technical punch-list items within the LV/MV scope.
- Collect and verify all manufacturing certificates, factory tests, and installation protocols to compile the LV/MV portion of the as-built documentation.
4. Regulatory Site Documentation
- Co-sign mandatory regulatory site acts under Bulgarian law (Act 12 for hidden electrical/cable works, grounding protocols, and equipment installation records).Cooperate with the external Construction Supervisor (Строителен надзор) to validate the technical safety of all low and medium-voltage installations.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Degree: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or Power Electronics (Електроинженер - Електроенергетика и електрообзавеждане / Автоматизация)
Experience:
- Minimum 3–4 years of experience supervising electrical installations, with a strong focus on medium-voltage (up to 33kV/35kV) networks, industrial automation, or renewable energy plants (Solar PV / BESS).
- Certifications: Valid qualification group for electrical safety (Minimum IV Квалификационна група по безопасност при работа в ел. уредби).
- Language Skills: Professional working proficiency in Bulgarian; good technical English (critical for reading specialized BESS manuals, communication protocols, and vendor software guides). [1, 2]
Technical Skills & Systems Knowledge
- Strong practical understanding of MV equipment (vacuum circuit breakers, protection relays) and low-voltage distribution.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus TCP/RTU, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850) and SCADA architecture.
- Ability to read complex multi-line wiring schematics, logic diagrams, and network topology drawings.
- Practical knowledge of the Bulgarian regulatory framework (ЗУТ, Наредби за устройство на електрическите уредби) for MV/LV installations.
Key Personal Qualities & Competencies
- Analytical Mindset & Troubleshooting Skill:
BESS projects involve highly complex digital communication networks interacting with physical battery chemistry and power electronics. The candidate must be exceptional at diagnosing software, communication, and hardware interface errors.
- Extreme Attention to Detail: Working with thousands of low-voltage control signals and high-density DC battery connections leaves no room for careless mistakes. Miswiring a single communication cable or thermal sensor can stall the entire commissioning phase.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination: Will act as the primary on-site link between foreign BESS technology suppliers and local electrical installation crews. The candidate must be communicative, patient, and precise when translating technical requirements into actionable site tasks.
- Proactive & Methodical
Approach: The assembly of battery systems requires a structured, step-by-step process. The engineer must resist contractor shortcuts and strictly follow the rigorous installation sequences dictated by the technology providers.
