The Senior Sustainability Specialist will be responsible for the delivery, coordination, and continuous improvement of sustainability performance across the EGL1 project. The role will support the Environmental Manager and Project Leadership Team, ensuring that sustainability, carbon, and ESG requirements are embedded across engineering, procurement, construction, and site operations.
The position combines strategic oversight with strong on-site presence and hands-on implementation.
Metlen Energy & Metals, in consortium with GE Vernova, is delivering the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) project — a £1.3bn HVDC interconnector developed by SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission. The project includes onshore converter stations and substations at Torness (East Lothian) and Hawthorn Pit (County Durham).
Your role will encompass:

Supporting the Environmental Manager in the development, implementation, and monitoring of project sustainability strategies

Leading the day-to-day delivery of sustainability initiatives across construction sites

Owning and maintaining the Project Carbon Management Plan, including tracking, reporting, and reduction actions
-
Monitoring, analysing, and reporting Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions in line with project and client requirements

Applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Whole Life Carbon principles to support engineering and procurement decisions

Defining, monitoring, and reporting Sustainability KPIs, ensuring compliance with internal, client, and regulatory frameworks

Preparing sustainability inputs for internal reports, client submissions, and external audits

Delivering sustainability and carbon-related toolbox talks, briefings, and training sessions to site teams
-
Conducting regular sustainability audits and inspections, identifying gaps and driving corrective actions

Embedding sustainability requirements across engineering, procurement, and construction activities
-
Coordinating sustainability data collection to support informed decision-making and performance tracking
-
Engaging with contractors, subcontractors, and designers to promote compliance and best practice

Supporting and mentoring junior sustainability personnel and site-based advisors
-
Promoting sustainability principles at site level, including carbon reduction, circular economy, waste management, water efficiency, and resource optimisation

Staying up to date with relevant legislation, industry standards, and best practices applicable to large infrastructure projects
What you bring to the role:

Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Structural or similar) or an Environmental discipline (Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management)

Demonstrated experience in sustainability and/or carbon management within major construction or infrastructure projects

Strong understanding of carbon accounting, LCA, Whole Life Carbon, and sustainability reporting

Ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary project environment

Strong stakeholder management and communication skills

Structured, proactive, and delivery-oriented approach

Ability to work autonomously while aligning with project governance and reporting lines

Full driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to project sites
