Job Description: 

We are seeking a Land Agent to secure high-quality, cost-effective land opportunities for the purpose of developing renewable energy projects in Ontario. The Land Agent will also oversee external land agency activities in other North American provinces/states. Working under the direction of the Senior Manager of Project Development, the Land Agent will identify suitable land parcels based on site selection analysis and strategic development priorities, negotiate option to lease/purchase agreements, and manage relations with neighbouring landowners, stakeholders and local governments.

This role requires a professional who can combine negotiation skill, community engagement, and integrity. The successful candidate will be responsive, proactive, work independently, and creative in finding solutions, securing sites, maintaining accurate records, and representing METLEN with transparency and professionalism.

The Land Agent will play a key role in building trust with landowners, communities, and regulators, ensuring that METLEN’s projects deliver meaningful local benefits and are developed responsibly and profitably. This Role Will Encompass

  • Identify and evaluate potential project sites in Ontario based on company screening and strategy.
  • Engage with landowners to negotiate land option, lease, and easement agreements that are financially efficient, transparent, and mutually beneficial.
  • Conduct due diligence on new properties, including title, encumbrances, zoning, and land use restrictions.
  • Participate in strategic discussions with the development team, offering on-the-ground insights about site quality, community sentiment, and deal structures.
  • Build and maintain strong, respectful relationships with landowners, local officials, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders.
  • Proactively engage community members, gather feedback, and incorporate local input into project design and siting.
  • Collaborate with developers to support early regulatory engagement and permitting strategy.
  • Maintain detailed records of all communications, negotiations, and agreements.
  • Represent METLEN with professionalism, honesty, and authenticity — acting as the face of the company in rural Ontario.
  • Develop creative community benefit ideas that foster genuine goodwill and long-term partnership.
  • Oversee external land acquisition agencies in other Canadian provinces and/or US states as needed.
  • Support project acquisition opportunities by reviewing existing leases, easements, and right of way agreements to identify red flags and summarize documents.

 

What you Bring to the Role

  • Diploma, License or degree in Real Estate, Land Management, Business, Planning, Environmental Studies, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent work experience in land acquisition, negotiation, or real estate transactions will be considered.
  • Strong understanding of agricultural practices in Ontario (common crops, livestock,growing seasons, seeding and harvesting windows, etc).
  • Knowledge of Ontario regulations affecting land acquisition, and consultations requirements
  • Strong understanding of Ontario land tenure, title systems and agreements
  • Ability to relate with and develop trust of rural landowners, community members, regulatory officials,  and government agencies.
  • Experience and  knowledge of Microsoft tools (including Teams, Sharepoint, etc), mapping tools and land management software.
  • Excellent negotiation, diplomacy, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate key agreement terms clearly.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and respect for stakeholders.
  • Understanding of land characteristics that are attractive or not-conducive to developing renewable energy projects (solar and/or BESS focused).
  • Strategically minded to prioritize efforts based on site attractiveness and likelihood of success.
  • 5+ years of land acquisition experience in infrastructure, utilities, or renewable energy with preference for solar and/or battery storage experience
  • Experience negotiating complex multi-party agreements with rural landowners and municipalities.
  • Experience in landowner outreach, relationship management and records of communication.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Planning Act, Municipal zoning and land use approvals and Environmental permitting process.
  • Demonstrated success in developing trusted relationships within local communities.
  • Previous experience with transmission corridor or right-of-way acquisition highly valued.
